Read story →We are 3158.CD — a rainforest science station, Congo River expedition base and Kinshasa creative lab. We track gorillas, map canopy, restore forest and build future tech with Congolese youth.
3158.CD started in 2019 as a tiny riverside hut in Kinkole, east of Kinshasa. The number 3158 was our first radio call-sign on the Congo River. Today it is a network: a lowland rainforest observatory, a river fleet, and an urban lab in the commune of Ngaba where students build sensors, films and forest startups.
We work where the second lung of the planet breathes. The Congo Basin stores 30 billion tons of carbon, hosts 10,000 plant species, forest elephants, bonobos, okapis and 150+ ethnic cultures. Our mission is simple: measure it, protect it, and make it pay for local people — not against them.
Canopy drones, acoustic traps, river eDNA, carbon plots. Open data every month from Salonga to Virunga.
Community forests, anti-poaching patrols with ICCN rangers, bonobo corridors and turtle nesting beaches.
Kinshasa code school, drone repair, eco-lodges, forest honey, documentaries in Lingala, French and English.
From 60-meter canopy towers to Kinshasa rooftops — pick your expedition. All programs fund conservation and pay local guides fairly.
Climb towers in Salonga, track okapi with GPS collars, record 214 bird species with AI acoustics. 7-day and 21-day research immersions.
Join team →Kinshasa → Kisangani by refurbished barge-lab. Map plastic, sample eDNA, film river cultures, stop at 12 riverside villages.
See route →Learn drone mapping, solar repair, documentary editing and rumba-electro production. 3-month paid fellowships for youth 18-28.
Meet fellows →2019 — one pirogue and a solar panel. 2026 — nine stations, two canopy towers, one floating lab and 40 village partners.
First water-quality tests on Pool Malebo. 12 volunteers, call-sign 3158.
Built 45m canopy tower with local carpenters. First okapi camera-trap census.
Launched solar barge laboratory. 4700 km transect Kinshasa–Kisangani.
Opened Ngaba campus: code, drones, film. 320 graduates, 18 startups.
All maps, bird songs and river data free for schools and parks.
Expedition diaries, science briefs and Kinshasa culture — published directly from the field. Click any story to read full version.

Read story →“I came to repair drones, I stayed to map my grandmother’s forest. Now our village earns from honey, not charcoal.”
“The barge-lab changed how we see the river. Kids test water themselves and send data to Kinshasa by satellite.”
“Tourists think Congo is only danger. We show them bonobos at dawn, rumba at night, and science in between.”
We operate only in stable zones with park authorities, satellite comms, medics and vetted routes. Kinshasa lab is open year-round; forest trips run June–February.
We speak Lingala, French and English. All briefings are in English + French, with local guides translating village dialects.
68% of expedition fees go to salaries, village funds and patrols. Audited yearly and published in our open report.
Yes — fellowships cover food, transport and gear. Bring curiosity; we teach the rest: GIS, eDNA, filming, first aid.
Leave your base in Kinshasa, wake up under hornbills. Next departures: Nov 14, Dec 05, Jan 18. 8 seats only.
